Tilapia is considered as the most consumed fish, not just in the Philippines but also in different parts of the world. What's more interesting is that this type of fish is being consumed by many Filipinos because of its delicious taste.
But then, everyone was left terrified after the scientists have discovered a deadly virus that attacked the wild farm of tilapia in Colombia and Ecuador.
The international team of researchers identified the virus as the Tillapia Lake Virus or the TiLV that is the close relative of the influenza viruses.
"Our findings suggest that tilapia lake virus represents a novel virus and that it poses global threat to tilapia aquaculture."
It was then revealed that when a healhty fish was exposed to such virus, it will result to a disease that matches with what's seen in other countries. The virus causes skin flaking, kidney problems in the infected fishes.
