Authorities is now warning people from all over the world about using battery-operated headphones when riding an airplane. This is after a woman suffered from burns on her face, neck and hands when her headphones caught fire. She was travelling from Beijing to Melbourne, Australia last February 19, and moments later a loud explosion came from the headphones wrapped around her.
“As I went to turn around I felt burning on my face,” she said in an interview with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).
“I just grabbed my face which caused the headphones to go around my neck. I continued to feel burning so I grabbed them off and threw them on the floor.
“They were sparking and had small amounts of fire,” she shared.
Flight attendants immediately took action and poured water on the burning headphones. However, the battery and the cover melted onto the plane's floor.
“People were coughing and choking the entire way home,”she shared noting that the smell of melted plastic, and burnt electronic filled the plane.
“As the range of products using batteries grows, the potential for in-flight issues increases,” said the transport safety bureau noting that lithium-ion batteries are likely to catch fire. They urged everyone to keep these batteries in their carry-on luggage.
Galaxy Note 7 smartphones has been restricted last year due to the same reports. With this, South Korea recalled these phones.
