Charice Pempengco, now known as Jake Zyrus, has become controversial for his recent name change and sexual reassignment transitioning. The singer has finally spoken up about the reason behind what he did and why he chose his new name.

During his appearance on “Tonight With Boy Abunda,” Jake Zyrus said that appearing in public after changing his name was more difficult than coming out as a lesbian.
He explains that he changed his name so that he could finally feel complete. When asked when why and how he chose the name “Jake,” he said that the process was quite simple. He just stood in front of a mirror and started saying random names.
When the name “Jake” passed through his lips, he felt a tug in his heart and he knew that it was the right one for him. He added “Zyrus” because he didn’t want just one name, but two.

For his future performances, Jake Zyrus is the name that he wants to hear his fans scream. However, the change has yet to be legalized and is still only a screen name for now.
Many reactions came with him changing his name. Many were inspired while others judged him and thought that it was pointless.
A controversial reaction to Jake’s decision was a video of his grandmother who was deeply enraged with what he did. When asked what his reaction to his grandmother’s video was, he answered that he understands his grandmother because he loves her. Despite their misunderstandings, Jake hopes that his grandmother and his family can see how happy he has become and appreciate him for who he is.
During the interview, Tito Boy asked Jake what his message was to the public was. He said:
“Di ko naman po ginawa or nagdesisyon para sa kanila. Nagdesisyon po ako dahil una sa lahat, napaka-importante sa lahat na masaya tayo at ginagawa ko to para sa mga taong hindi kayang gawin pa. Gusto ko po maging inspirasyon ng lahat. Hindi sila nag-iisa, kung kaya ko, kaya din nila.”
According to Jake, he merely wants to inspire others to be brave in fighting for their happiness.
