A lot of pressure was put on Philippine bet Maxine Medina right after she won the Binibining Pilipinas title--she was supposed to represent the country in the 65th Miss Universe held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
Lots of Filipinos scrutinized her, from not having a translator to wrongly citing former first lady Imelda Marcos as the inventor of the 'terno.'
But despite all these, the interior designer and beauty queen did not back out, even after Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz claimed that her chances of winning the pageant were "one in a million."
Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, however, stuck with Maxine and supported her throughout, saying that"I think she did very well. I'm very proud of her. This girl has been training for months leading up to the competition. I saw how hard she worked for this."
In her interview with ABS-CBN, Maxine thanked her supporters, but she was also asked about her bashers and critics. According to her, "Pia's different, so you should love me for who I am!" she said with a smile. She also expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped her improve throughout her Miss Universe journey.
Pia tweeted her sentiments and said that Filipinos should be proud of her for being able to represent the Philippines. According to Inquirer, she said “So proud of Maxine. She represented the Philippines so well. And guys, she wanted it just as much as you did. Let’s not bash our kababayan (countryman)."
Maxine was able to reach the Top 6 finalists along with Miss France, Miss Kenya, Miss Columbia, Miss Thailand, and Miss Haiti. Former beauty queen and Philippine bet Charlene Gonzalez also secured the same spot during the 1994 Miss Universe which was held in Manila.
